Description
The route, 1303 km long with more than 6200 metres of elevation gain, can be divided into 7 stages, each with its own specific characteristics:
- Stage 1, Videle – Giurgiu, 115 km / 400 metres elevation gain, a section crossing a gently rolling landscape in the Romanian Plain, transitioning towards the Romanian bank of the Danube and passing through the following major localities: Videle, Călugăreni, Comana, Băneasa and Giurgiu.
- Stage 2, Giurgiu – Dăbuleni, 179 km / 500 metres elevation gain, a section crossing four counties — Giurgiu, Teleorman, Olt and Dolj — on roads closest to the Romanian bank of the Danube, passing through Giurgiu, Zimnicea, Turnu Măgurele, Corabia and Dăbuleni.
- Stage 3, Dăbuleni – Drobeta-Turnu Severin, 235 km / 800 metres elevation gain, a section crossing Dolj and Mehedinți counties on roads closest to the Romanian bank of the Danube, passing through Dăbuleni, Bechet, Rast, Poiana Mare, Maglavit, Cetate, Izvoarele, Crivina and Drobeta-Turnu Severin.
- Stage 4, Drobeta-Turnu Severin – Naidăș, 185 km / 1500 metres elevation gain, crossing Mehedinți and Caraș-Severin counties. This is the most demanding section in terms of climbing, as well as traffic along the Iron Gates – Orșova section (approximately 15 km). The route follows roads located directly along the Romanian bank of the Danube, mostly through the Danube Gorge area, making it the most spectacular part of the route. Major localities include Drobeta-Turnu Severin, Eșelnița, Dubova, Moldova Veche and Baziaș. At Naidăș, riders cross the border into Serbia at Kaluderovo.
- Stage 5, Kaluderovo – Iron Gates, 174 km / 1600 metres elevation gain, following the Serbian bank of the Danube. This section is as demanding in terms of climbing as the previous one and may be considered the “queen stage” of the event. The route follows roads that form part of Serbia’s EuroVelo 6 corridor and offers spectacular views of the Danube and the Romanian bank. Major localities along the route include Bela Crkva, Stara Palanka (where the Danube is crossed by ferry), Ram, Veliko Gradište and Golubac. At Novi Sip, riders cross the border back into Romania at Iron Gates.
- Stage 6, Iron Gates – Dăbuleni, 248 km / 800 metres elevation gain, essentially the reverse of Stage 3, crossing Mehedinți and Dolj counties on roads closest to the Romanian bank of the Danube. Major localities include Drobeta-Turnu Severin, Crivina, Izvoarele, Cetate, Maglavit, Poiana Mare, Rast, Bechet and Dăbuleni.
- Stage 7, Dăbuleni – Turnu Măgurele – Videle, 167 km / 600 metres elevation gain, the final section of the route, crossing Dolj, Olt and Teleorman counties and passing through Dăbuleni, Corabia, Turnu Măgurele, Roșiorii de Vede and Videle.
